  1. In 1959, Dick was the first junior to be selected by the Chicago Sun-Times as Chicago’s high school player of the year.
  2. He played linebacker on defense and center on offense, astonishingly earning him a spot All-American team by the year 1964.
  3. In his junior year, he led the Illini to an 8-1-1 record and victory over the University of Washington in the Rose Bowl game on New Year’s Day 1964.
  4. His first year of eligibility saw him admitted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979.
  5. Dick amassed 1,020 tackles, 22 interceptions, and 27 fumble recoveries during the course of a career that was cut short by injuries, the last of which was an NFL record for a defensive player at the time of his retirement in 1973.
  6. Several of the NFL’s most recognizable players have endured throughout its 104-year history. One of them was Dick Butkus.
  7. Dick recovered 27 fumbles and intercepted 22 passes over his NFL career, which was a record at the time he retired.
  8. Dick was chosen for the Pro Bowl for the first of eight times in a row and was also named to the first of five straight first-team All-Pro teams.
